For their internet grocery distribution facilities in Maidstone (South East England) and in Greenford (NW London), Tesco.com chose to outsource the maintenance and on-site support of the automated material handling system to Vanderlande Industries.
Vanderlande recruited, trained and manages a team of service engineers at each site. Integrated into the Tesco team Vanderlande Industries is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the entire automated material handling system. In addition daily operational advice is provided to the local management team to fully realise the efficiencies of an automated material handling system. To schedule maintenance and to achieve continuous process improvement for their system, the site based teams at Tesco.com make use of a multi site CMMS (computerised maintenance management system).
Chris May, Store Manager Tesco.com Greenford says: “Our Vanderlande site team works seamlessly with our operational teams to provide a robust, reliable and flexible system that we can trust to perform even through our most demanding days.”
In these two dedicated facilities the Vanderlande Industries supplied automated system is responsible for the order consolidation process and the release and sorting of the consolidated orders to critical van despatch times. At the heart of the consolidation system is an automated buffer consisting of a 3-aisle QUICKSTORE HDS shuttle system and a total of 18 shuttles.
